1991 Gary Fisher Advance

April 23rd 2016

This sizzle red Gary Fisher was for sale down in Tasmania. The seller was retiring and moving up to Queensland – and clearing out the garage.

Part of Fisher’s ‘Freemclimbing series’ (there was also the ‘Racing series’), the Advance was the entry-level offering in the 1991 range. It had a 100% chrome-moly frame and fork (this was 1991 remember) and also featured Fisher’s Evolution components (oversized frame tubing, fork, stem, headset, bottom bracket, and seat post).

A member of a forum I hang out on offered to collect it for me (it was 15 mins from his home) and his local bike shop was cool to pack it ready for a courier.

It’s in complete original condition – 400LX drivetrain, Fisher SwitchBax tyres, FisherLite saddle, FisherLite hex grips, the lot. It even came with the original Fisher branded toe clips, reflectors, and owners manual.

So, not much restoring to do here (maybe just a few components). All it really needs is a good clean up.

  1. I was so happy to see this bike. I believe you could get the Advance of this year in two colors, red and blue. I had the blue with silver splatter. I’ve since customized it into a camo bike and upgraded the components to deore and xt. I also added the longer and different angled goose neck to stretch out the ride. The seat is long gone and I have the old wheels with Xc Pro’s in their place and Wahoo brake handles in place (along with grip shift) and the old calipers. The original bio pace, Kalloy seat stem and and quick release clamp are still on it. I bought this bike in Reno, NV and a few years later took it apart and painted it like a dummy; erasing all the vintage forever. That’s why it’s now customized for performance sake. Thanks for the pics!!!

  2. Hello, if you should ever come across the Gary Fisher 1991 Advance in blue w/silver thread paint and 400 LX components, let me know. I have an offer for it. I’m convinced they only made one for promo and I have it but I could be wrong. Alan5014@icloud.com

      • Hello, as a follow up, I finally found and bought a 1991 Fisher ‘Advance’ in Blue. It is in show room condition but it differs slightly from the one I have(had) in that it’s a version sold in Japan. The Pedals, ABS brake calipers, seat and headset are different but similar. I can simply add my parts accept for the elusive seat to make one of the rarest MT bikes. My collection now includes a ‘Paragon’, ‘Gitche Gumee’, ‘Wahoo’, 2 ‘Advances and an ‘Aquila’ I need 1″ forks for. (90’s bikes). To this day my search hasn’t come up with the 91 Advance in blue USA addition. -Alan

  3. I bought a blue with silver splatter Fisher Advance in the summer of ’91 in Crested Butte, CO. (I was 21.) It had the 400 LX, but all the components were switched out years ago. Not my main ride anymore, but I still have it and still take it out around the neighborhood now and then. Met my wife and raised three kids on that bike…will never get rid of it.
